Humidity Issues Velvet Leaf Desiccation on anthurium regale
What's Happening
Anthurium regale evolved as cloud forest epiphyte requiring 70-85% RH. Dense leaf trichomes (velvet texture) evolved to capture moisture from air and reduce transpiration. In indoor conditions (30-50% RH), trichomes dry, curl, and crack causing brown crispy edges and tip burn. Velvet texture also traps water spot mineral deposits from tap water, appearing as white crusty patches.
How to Fix It
- 1
Install humidifier maintaining 70-80% RH minimum—room humidifiers or pebble trays insufficient
- 2
Group with other plants to create humidity microclimate
- 3
Use distilled or rainwater ONLY—tap water minerals deposit on trichomes
- 4
Mist sparsely if at all; never let water sit on leaves
- 5
Increase air circulation gently with small fan to prevent fungal issues in high humidity
How to Prevent It
Maintain 75-85% humidity year-round; use only distilled/rainwater for watering and misting; provide bright indirect light (no direct sun); ensure excellent drainage—never let sit in water; maintain temperatures 65-80°F with high humidity.
