Bottom Watering on calathea
What's Happening
Calathea root systems are fine and sensitive to water chemistry fluctuations. Top-watering with tap water exposes roots to concentrated chemical shock at the soil surface where water first enters, while uneven saturation patterns create zones of high mineral concentration. Bottom watering with filtered water allows gradual, even uptake through capillary action and prevents the salt accumulation that occurs at soil surfaces from repeated top-watering evaporation.
How to Fix It
- 1
1. Select appropriate container: Use inner pot with drainage holes set inside clear cache pot for easy bottom watering
- 2
2. Fill cache pot: Add room-temperature filtered/distilled water to cache pot up to 1/4 height of inner pot
- 3
3. Allow absorption time: Let plant sit in water for 15-30 minutes until top soil surface feels moist to touch
- 4
4. Drain thoroughly: Remove inner pot and allow excess water to drain completely; never leave standing water for >1 hour
- 5
5. Frequency: Water when top 1 inch of soil feels dry; typically every 5-7 days depending on humidity and season
How to Prevent It
Implement consistent bottom-watering routine using room-temperature filtered, distilled, or rainwater. Maintain soil moisture at consistent level without allowing complete drying. Use clear cache pots to monitor water uptake and prevent over-saturation.
