Brown Spots on dieffenbachia
What's Happening
Dieffenbachia brown spots have two distinct etiologies. THRIPS DAMAGE: These rasping-sucking pests scrape leaf cells and feed on sap, creating irregular grey-to-brown dry spots with characteristic black frass (excrement) specks. BACTERIAL LEAF SPOT: Xanthomonas or Erwinia species enter through wounds or stomata, creating water-soaked lesions that turn brown/necrotic with yellow halos, often accompanied by bacterial ooze in humid conditions. Distinguishing feature: Thrips damage has scattered irregular spots with visible frass; bacterial spots have angular lesions following leaf veins with sticky exudate.
How to Fix It
- 1
For thrips: Isolate plant; prune heavily affected leaves; apply insecticidal soap or neem oil every 5-7 days for 3 weeks; use sticky traps
- 2
For bacterial spot: Remove infected leaves immediately; sterilize tools with alcohol between cuts; improve air circulation with fan
- 3
Disinfect: Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide or copper fungicide to cut surfaces
- 4
Prevention spray: Use neem oil prophylactically every 2 weeks during high-risk periods
- 5
Monitor: Inspect leaf undersides weekly with 10x magnification for thrips nymphs or bacterial ooze
How to Prevent It
Quarantine new plants 2 weeks; maintain 60-70% humidity with humidifier (not misting); ensure bright indirect light (2000-5000 lux); provide air circulation; avoid wetting foliage during watering; sterilize pruning tools before each use.
