Leaf Bruising on monstera deliciosa
What's Happening
New, unfurling Monstera leaves are extremely tender and epiascidiate, making them highly susceptible to mechanical bruising from physical handling or tight ties. These bruises appear as dark brown or black patches that do not spread like disease but remain as permanent scars.
How to Fix It
- 1
Loosen or remove tight strings or ties near the top of the plant where new growth emerges.
- 2
Avoid touching or moving unfurling leaves until they have fully hardened off.
- 3
Use soft, expandable materials like velcro strips or fabric ties for support.
How to Prevent It
Provide high humidity (60%+) during the unfurling phase to keep tissues pliable and reduce friction-induced damage. Support the stem rather than the petiole.
