Brown Spots (Rust) on philodendron
What's Happening
Rust (Puccinia spp.) presents as multiple small, rust-colored or orange-brown spots that spread across multiple plants in proximity. It is a fungal infection common in dense collections with high humidity.
How to Fix It
- 1
Isolate contaminated plants immediately.
- 2
Wipe each leaf individually with a neem oil solution, using a fresh paper towel for every leaf to prevent cross-contamination.
- 3
Remove heavily infected leaves at the base.
- 4
Note: Treated leaves may become photosensitive; provide temporary shade for 7 days post-treatment.
How to Prevent It
Increase spacing between plants to at least 12 inches. Optimize ventilation. Conduct weekly underside inspections, as rust often starts as pustules on the bottom of the leaf.
