Fertilizer Burn on philodendron
What's Happening
Over-fertilization causes leaf tip and margin burn as excess salts accumulate in soil, drawing water out of roots through osmosis. This creates drought-like symptoms despite adequate soil moisture. Fertilizer salts also alter soil pH, locking out essential nutrients.
How to Fix It
- 1
Identify fertilizer burn: brown, crispy tips and margins; yellowing from edges inward
- 2
Stop fertilizing immediately
- 3
Flush soil thoroughly: run water through pot for 3-5 minutes to leach salts
- 4
Remove severely damaged leaves
- 5
Repot if salt buildup severe: use fresh soil and reduce pot size if rootbound
- 6
Resume fertilizing at 1/4 strength only after 6-8 weeks
- 7
Switch to organic or slow-release fertilizer to prevent future burn
- 8
Monitor new growth: should be healthy and green once salts removed
How to Prevent It
Use 1/4 to 1/2 strength of manufacturer recommended fertilizer dose. Apply only during active growing season (spring/summer). Flush soil monthly by running water through pot for 2-3 minutes to remove salt buildup.
