Pot Too Small on philodendron
What's Happening
When roots fill the pot completely, the plant becomes rootbound. Roots circle the pot bottom, grow through drainage holes, or form a dense mat. Growth slows as roots have no room to expand and soil nutrients deplete faster.
How to Fix It
- 1
Check if roots growing through drainage holes or circling pot
- 2
Water runs straight through pot without soaking in
- 3
Repot into container 1-2 inches larger in diameter
- 4
Use fresh well-draining aroid mix when repotting
- 5
Gently loosen root ball before repotting if circling
- 6
Water thoroughly after repotting and allow to drain
How to Prevent It
Repot annually or when roots fill pot; choose pot size appropriate for root ball with room for growth; refresh soil with annual top-dressing if not repotting
