Sunburn on philodendron
What's Happening
Direct sunlight exposure causes phototoxicity and leaf scorch. Philodendrons are tropical understory plants adapted to filtered light. Direct sun exceeding 2-4 hours causes cellular damage, bleaching, and crispy brown patches. Symptoms appear rapidly after sun exposure.
How to Fix It
- 1
Move plant immediately to bright indirect light location
- 2
Trim severely scorched leaves with sterile scissors to redirect energy
- 3
Increase humidity to 60-80% to aid recovery
- 4
Water normally - avoid overwatering as compensation
- 5
Monitor for new growth over 2-4 weeks
- 6
Gradually acclimate if moving to brighter location in future
What You'll Need
How to Prevent It
Use sheer curtains on windows receiving direct sun; position in north or east-facing windows; use light meter app to maintain 1000-3000 lux indirect light; acclimate gradually over 1-2 weeks when relocating
