Yellow Leaves (Thrips) on philodendron
What's Happening
Thrips larvae and adults rasp leaf tissue, causing subtle stippled yellowing or faded patches. Unlike overwatering, this is often accompanied by stalled growth and deformed new leaves. Tropical thrips are particularly hard to spot without magnification.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect leaf undersides and yellow spots with a 10x magnifier for tiny white larvae.
- 2
Apply systemic pesticide (e.g., spinosad or Bonide Systemic Granules) to break the 3-4 week lifecycle.
- 3
Shower the plant to physically dislodge pests.
- 4
Quarantine the plant to prevent spread to other Philodendrons.
What You'll Need
How to Prevent It
Conduct weekly pest patrols with magnification. Maintain high humidity (60%+) which thrips dislike. Quarantine all new arrivals for 14 days.
