Sunburn on pink princess
What's Happening
While high light encourages pink variegation, light that is too intense (direct sunlight or overly powerful LEDs) can 'bleach' the pink tissue, turning it white or translucent. This is caused by the degradation of anthocyanins (pink pigment) and lack of chlorophyll protection in variegated sectors.
How to Fix It
- 1
If pink sectors turn white, move the plant 6-12 inches further away from the light source
- 2
Use a sheer curtain to filter direct window light
- 3
Check light intensity with a meter; target 200-400 PPFD (approx. 1000-2000 foot-candles) for optimal pink without bleaching
- 4
Do not prune white leaves unless they become crispy/brown, as they still contribute to the plant's aesthetic value
What You'll Need
How to Prevent It
Acclimate the plant gradually to new light setups; monitor the newest leaves for color shifts; maintain cooler temperatures (65-75°F) as heat can accelerate pigment breakdown.
