Bacterial Leaf Spot on pothos
What's Happening
Bacterial leaf spot caused by Pseudomonas species creates distinctive dark brown to black spots surrounded by yellow halos. Unlike overwatering spots, these lesions are angular (bounded by leaf veins) and water-soaked when fresh. The bacteria enter through stomata or wounds and spread via water splash, misting, or contaminated tools.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect for diagnostic yellow halos around brown spots—this confirms bacterial infection
- 2
Isolate affected plant immediately to prevent spread
- 3
Stop all misting and overhead watering—bacteria spread through water droplets
- 4
Remove severely affected leaves with sterilized scissors; disinfect tools between cuts
- 5
Apply copper-based bactericide following label instructions
- 6
Improve air circulation with a small fan to dry foliage quickly
How to Prevent It
Avoid misting leaves; water at soil level only. Maintain 40-60% humidity without leaf wetting. Sterilize tools between plants. Ensure good air circulation.
