Thyme-Oil-Nanoemulsion-Treatment on pothos
What's Happening
Thyme essential oil nanoemulsion contains thymol as the primary active compound (along with carvacrol, p-cymene, and ɣ-terpinene) which targets fungal cell wall-degrading enzymes. At 3000 ppm concentration, thymol forms five pi-alkyl interactions with pectate lyase enzyme residues (Val308, Phe294, Trp290, Phe282, His689) and hydrogen bonds with Asp688, completely inhibiting Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii growth through enzymatic disruption. Nanoemulsion droplet size of 94.82 nm with polydispersity index 0.436 ensures uniform distribution.
How to Fix It
- 1
1. Prepare nanoemulsion: Mix thyme essential oil with Tween 80 surfactant and water using high-energy ultrasonication at 700W output for 30 minutes to create stable nanoemulsion with droplet size under 95 nm
- 2
2. Apply at therapeutic concentration: Use 3000 ppm (0.3% v/v) thyme oil nanoemulsion for complete fungal inhibition; lower concentrations of 1000-2000 ppm provide partial suppression of pathogen growth
- 3
3. Soil drench application: Apply prepared nanoemulsion directly to infected soil at rate of 100 mL per 30cm pot diameter, ensuring thorough saturation of the entire root zone
- 4
4. Repeat treatment cycle: Reapply every 7-10 days for 3-4 consecutive treatments to maintain therapeutic levels and prevent pathogen recovery between applications
- 5
5. Monitor recovery metrics: Expect 4.61-fold to 11.18-fold increase in root length and 28.59-fold to 45.62-fold increase in root fresh weight compared to untreated infected plants after complete treatment cycle
How to Prevent It
Apply 1000 ppm thyme oil nanoemulsion as preventive soil drench monthly during high-risk periods including winter dormancy and post-repotting stress; store nanoemulsion properly as nano-formulations maintain stability longer than bulk oils but still require appropriate storage conditions
