Winter Fertilizer Dormancy on pothos
What's Happening
Pothos enters dormancy during fall and winter months (October-February) as day length decreases and indoor temperatures drop. During this period, metabolic activity slows dramatically and nutrient requirements diminish to maintenance levels. Continued fertilization during dormancy forces the plant to process excess nutrients it cannot utilize, resulting in salt accumulation in soil, root burn, and potential leaf damage. Community reports consistently show that plants fertilized during winter dormancy exhibit higher rates of fertilizer burn and stress symptoms.
How to Fix It
- 1
1. Cease all fertilization when fall begins and growth visibly slows (typically October)
- 2
2. Continue normal watering but allow soil to dry completely between applications
- 3
3. Resume fertilizing only when new spring growth appears (March-April)
- 4
4. If concerned about nutrient depletion: top-dress with compost or worm castings in late winter (February) for slow-release organic nutrition
- 5
5. Monitor soil EC (electrical conductivity) with meter if available—should remain below 1.0 mS/cm during dormancy
How to Prevent It
Completely suspend fertilization from October through February; maintain minimal watering schedule allowing soil to dry 2-3 inches between waterings; provide consistent bright indirect light to support healthy dormancy transition.
