Yellow Leaves - Fertilizer Burn on pothos
What's Happening
Nutrient salt toxicity occurs when accumulated fertilizers and organic amendments (compost, manure) create high electrical conductivity in soil, burning root hairs and blocking water uptake. Pothos in oversized pots with heavy organic mixes are especially vulnerable—excess soil volume retains salts while low transpiration rates prevent leaching. Symptoms include tip browning followed by full-leaf yellowing.
How to Fix It
- 1
1. Stop all fertilizer immediately
- 2
2. Flush soil thoroughly: Run 2-3 pot volumes of room-temperature distilled water through soil
- 3
3. Ensure full drainage: Lift pot and verify water exits freely—if not, repot
- 4
4. Hold fertilizer for 4-6 weeks minimum
- 5
5. Resume at 1/4 dilution only after new healthy growth appears
- 6
6. Switch to lighter, more inorganic potting mix if problem recurs
How to Prevent It
Fertilize at 1/4 strength monthly during growing season only; flush soil every 6-8 weeks with 2x pot volume of distilled water; use well-draining inorganic mixes (40% soil, 30% perlite, 20% coco, 10% charcoal); avoid heavy organic amendments; match pot size to root ball.
