Blooming Issues on schlumbergera
What's Happening
Thanksgiving/Christmas cacti (Schlumbergera) are short-day plants requiring specific environmental triggers to initiate flowering. Bloom failure stems from three primary causes: (1) Insufficient light-dark cycles—need 12-14 hours uninterrupted darkness for 6-8 weeks in fall; (2) Temperature too warm—buds form when night temperatures drop to 50-55°F (10-13°C); (3) Improper pruning—removing terminal segments eliminates flower buds which form at stem tips. Unlike desert cacti, these epiphytic jungle cacti need higher humidity (50-60%) and cannot tolerate drought stress during bud formation.
How to Fix It
- 1
Light-dark trigger: Provide 12-14 hours complete darkness daily starting 8 weeks before desired bloom (late September for Thanksgiving bloom)
- 2
Temperature drop: Maintain night temperatures at 50-55°F (10-13°C) for 6-8 weeks—critical for bud initiation
- 3
Reduce watering: Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings during bud formation (but do not drought-stress)
- 4
Maintain humidity: Use pebble tray or humidifier to maintain 50-60% humidity
- 5
Avoid disturbance: Do not move plant once buds appear—environmental changes cause bud drop
- 6
Fertilize: Apply high-phosphorus fertilizer (bloom booster) monthly during bud development
How to Prevent It
Understand species-specific requirements: Schlumbergera truncata (Thanksgiving cactus) blooms earlier than S. bridgesii (Christmas cactus). Start dark treatment in September for November blooms. Maintain consistent care year-round—stress from neglect inhibits flowering.
