Bacterial Soft Rot on snake plant
What's Happening
Sansevieria trifasciata leaf extracts exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity effective against bacterial soft rot pathogens (PMID 39687956). Overwatering creates anaerobic conditions favoring Erwinia and Pythium proliferation. The plant's endogenous antimicrobial compounds provide natural defense, but chronic saturation overwhelms these mechanisms.
How to Fix It
- 1
Remove plant and rinse all soil from root system
- 2
Identify bacterial infection: soft translucent tissue with foul odor indicates Erwinia
- 3
Trim all infected tissue until firm white rhizome is exposed
- 4
Sterilize with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for 20 minutes
- 5
Dust cut surfaces with cinnamon powder (natural antimicrobial barrier)
- 6
Allow to callus for 48 hours before repotting in dry soil
- 7
Withhold water for 14 days post-repotting
How to Prevent It
Prevent bacterial colonization by maintaining soil oxygen levels above 2mg/L through extended dry periods. Water only when soil is completely dry to 3 inches depth.
