Watering Mounted Ferns on staghorn fern
What's Happening
Mounted staghorn ferns cannot retain moisture like potted plants. Their exposed root systems in sphagnum moss dry out rapidly—especially in warm, dry indoor environments—leading to crispy fronds and stunted growth. However, overwatering causes root rot because stagnant water in moss creates anaerobic conditions. The key is thorough soaking followed by complete drip-drying.

Check moss moisture: Press finger into moss—if dry 1 inch deep, it's time to water

Remove mount from wall and submerge in sink/basin of room-temperature water

Soak for 10-20 minutes until moss is fully saturated and no longer floating

Lift and allow to drip-dry for 15-30 minutes in the sink or over a towel

Check weight: Mount should feel noticeably lighter than when first removed from water

Rehang only when dripping has stopped completely—never hang while dripping
