Dormancy Fertilizer Timing on alocasia
What's Happening
Dormant Alocasia tubers have minimal metabolic activity and cannot process nutrients. Premature fertilization creates osmotic stress that burns emerging root hairs and forces the plant to expend energy on nutrient processing before photosynthetic capacity has recovered. The nitrogen buildup can also encourage fungal growth around the vulnerable crown during the critical re-establishment phase.
How to Fix It
- 1
Wait until second or third new leaf has fully unfurled and hardened before fertilizing
- 2
Begin with 1/4 strength balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 NPK) applied to moist soil only
- 3
Increase to 1/2 strength after 4-6 weeks of active growth
- 4
Use slow-release granular fertilizer at half recommended rate if preferred
- 5
Avoid high-nitrogen formulations initially as they promote soft growth vulnerable to pests
How to Prevent It
Resume fertilization only when plant shows sustained growth for 3+ consecutive weeks, indicating complete metabolic recovery from dormancy.
