Harvesting Gel Cutting Technique on aloe vera
What's Happening
Improper cutting technique damages the leaf base and introduces pathogens. Aloe vera leaves must be cut at the precise junction where the leaf meets the stem without tearing the fibrous outer rind. Ragged cuts or partial severing leave wound tissue exposed to bacterial infection and reduce the plant's ability to seal the wound with callus tissue.
How to Fix It
- 1
Sterilize scissors or knife with 70% isopropyl alcohol
- 2
Cut at the leaf base where it meets the central stem - cut parallel to the stem surface
- 3
Make a single clean cut - do not saw or tear the leaf
- 4
Remove the entire leaf including the white basal portion
- 5
Allow plant wound to dry and callus for 24-48 hours before next watering
How to Prevent It
Always use sterilized cutting tools (wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol before each cut). Cut cleanly at the leaf base without twisting or tearing. Allow wound to callus for 24-48 hours before watering the plant.
