Nutrient_needs on aloe vera
What's Happening
Succulents like Aloe have lower nutrient requirements than tropical plants due to slow growth rates and CAM metabolism efficiency. However, soilless gritty mixes (100% inorganic) create deficiencies in nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients after 6-12 months. Conversely, standard potting soils with pre-mixed slow-release fertilizer provide excess nutrients that cause leggy growth and reduced stress tolerance.
How to Fix It
- 1
Dilute liquid succulent fertilizer to 25% of label recommendation; apply monthly March-September only
- 2
For gritty mixes: Add 10% worm castings or compost to provide slow-release organic nutrients without water retention
- 3
Flush salts: Every 6-8 weeks, water thoroughly until 20% drains from bottom to leach accumulated minerals
- 4
Monitor for deficiency signs: pale/yellowing lower leaves indicate nitrogen shortage; add dilute fish emulsion
- 5
Avoid fertilizing newly propagated or stressed plants until roots establish (4-6 weeks post-propagation)
How to Prevent It
Use balanced succulent-specific fertilizer at 1/4 strength during active growth season only (spring-summer). Select potting soils without pre-added fertilizer to control nutrient delivery. Flush soil with plain water every 4-6 waterings to prevent salt buildup from tap water.
