Light Needs on anthurium
What's Happening
Anthuriums are adapted to tropical understory conditions receiving bright, filtered light (2000-5000 lux PPFD). Low light levels (<1500 lux) reduce photosynthetic capacity, limiting energy available for carotenoid and anthocyanin accumulation in spathes, resulting in pale coloration and reduced blooming. Excessive direct sunlight (>10000 lux) causes photooxidative stress, leaf scorch, and chlorophyll degradation. Research on bract coloration (PMID 40733391) confirms light intensity directly regulates pigment biosynthesis pathways.
How to Fix It
- 1
Measure light with meter or smartphone app: target 2000-5000 lux bright indirect light
- 2
Position 3-6 feet from south-facing windows with sheer curtain, or 1-3 feet from east-facing windows
- 3
Rotate plant quarterly for even light distribution and prevent phototropism (leaning toward light)
- 4
Monitor leaf color: dark green leaves indicate insufficient light; pale or scorched patches indicate excess light
How to Prevent It
East-facing windows provide ideal morning light without harsh afternoon sun. Use sheer curtains for south/west windows. Maintain consistent daily light duration of 10-12 hours; supplement with grow lights (full spectrum, 4000-6500K) during winter or in low-light spaces.
