No New Growth From Low Humidity on begonia
What's Happening
Begonia's tropical understory origin requires 60-80% relative humidity for proper cell expansion and leaf unfurling. Below 40% RH, the transpiration rate exceeds water uptake capacity, causing leaves to emerge crinkled or remain stunted. The reduced vapor pressure deficit limits stomatal opening, restricting CO2 intake and photosynthetic rate below the threshold needed for new leaf development.
How to Fix It
- 1
Move plant to high-humidity location: bathroom during showers, near humidifier, or group with other plants
- 2
Set up pebble tray: Fill shallow tray with pebbles and water, place pot on top (not in water)
- 3
Run humidifier 4-6 hours daily to maintain 60%+ RH in plant area
- 4
Expect new leaves to unfurl normally within 2-3 weeks of humidity improvement
- 5
Continue high humidity until 3-4 new leaves emerge fully expanded
How to Prevent It
Maintain 60-80% humidity year-round using humidifiers, pebble trays, or grouping plants. Place in bathrooms with showers for natural humidity. Monitor with hygrometer - increase humidity supplementation when indoor RH drops below 50%. Mist leaf undersides only (not tops) if necessary.
