Scale Insects on ficus shivereana
What's Happening
Scale insects - Coccidae family - infest Ficus Shivereana by attaching to leaf undersides and stems, feeding on phloem sap. The variegated cultivar is equally susceptible to standard Ficus elastica but the pests are harder to spot on cream/white patterned leaves. Scale excrete honeydew that promotes sooty mold, further reducing photosynthesis in already chlorophyll-limited tissue. The waxy protective covering makes them resistant to simple wiping or water sprays.
How to Fix It

Inspect all leaf surfaces - top and bottom - stems, and petioles for brown waxy bumps that do not wipe off easily

Dip paper towel or cotton swab in 70% rubbing alcohol and wipe each scale individually to dissolve waxy coating

Apply systemic insecticide containing imidacloprid to soil for heavy infestations - this targets crawlers systemically

Repeat treatment weekly for 4 weeks to catch hatching crawlers and break the lifecycle

Isolate plant during treatment to prevent spread to other houseplants
How to Prevent It
Quarantine all new plants for 2 weeks minimum. Inspect weekly with 10x loupe, focusing on leaf undersides and stem joints. Maintain 50-60% humidity and good air circulation to strengthen plant defenses. Avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen which creates soft growth attractive to scales.
