Scale on indoor lemon
What's Happening
Scale insects (armored or soft) attach to stems and leaves, sucking sap and secreting honeydew. This honeydew often leads to secondary sooty mold growth (black film). Indoors, scale thrive due to lack of natural predators and poor air circulation.
How to Fix It
- 1
Physically remove visible scale domes using alcohol-soaked cotton swabs or a soft brush.
- 2
Apply a systemic soil drench (e.g., Monterey Fruit Tree and Shrub) for long-term eradication.
- 3
Spray with neem oil or horticultural oil to smother crawlers.
- 4
CRITICAL: If using systemics, remove all flower buds for 6 months or keep the tree indoors to prevent killing pollinators.
How to Prevent It
Maintain 40-60% humidity and good airflow. Perform monthly stem/leaf inspections. Avoid over-fertilizing, as high nitrogen attracts sap-sucking pests.
