Edema on jade plant
What's Happening
Edema appears as small corky bumps or blisters on jade leaves from irregular watering. Plant cells absorb water faster than transpiration can release it, causing cell rupture. Common in spring/summer growth spurts or after drought-then-deluge cycles. Harmless but indicates watering inconsistency.
How to Fix It
- 1
Assess watering pattern: identify drought-to-flood cycles causing edema
- 2
Establish consistent schedule: deep watering every 2-3 weeks when soil fully dry
- 3
Remove severely affected leaves for aesthetics (optional - edema is cosmetic)
- 4
Improve airflow around plant to support transpiration
- 5
Monitor new growth: should appear smooth with consistent watering
What You'll Need
How to Prevent It
Maintain consistent watering schedule; water deeply when top 2-3 inches dry (not sporadic small amounts); ensure good airflow; avoid sudden humidity changes; use moisture meter for accuracy.
