Powdery Mildew on jade plant
What's Happening
Powdery mildew (Erysiphe/Oidium spp.) on jade stems signals high stem-base humidity from soggy soil, unique to succulents in organic retail media. Poor air circulation and overhead watering create microclimates where fungal spores germinate. Jade's succulent physiology makes it intolerant to prolonged humidity >60% RH.
How to Fix It
- 1
Isolate plant to prevent spore spread
- 2
Prepare spray: 2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp dish soap (non-antibacterial), 2 quarts water
- 3
Apply spray to all affected areas in early morning/evening, avoiding direct sun; repeat every 7-10 days
- 4
Improve airflow with fan or spacing; prune infected parts and dispose
- 5
Repot in sterile fast-draining succulent mix (50% perlite/pumice) with terracotta pot
How to Prevent It
Maintain 40-50% RH with dehumidifier or silica gel; ensure bright indirect light (2000-5000 lux); water at soil level only; quarantine new plants; always repot retail jade into inorganic-heavy mixes immediately.
