Stem Cutting on jade plant
What's Happening
Stem cuttings root faster than leaves (2-4 weeks) but require callus formation and well-draining medium. Overwatering during rooting causes rot before roots establish. Jade stems store sufficient water to survive dry periods during callusing phase.
How to Fix It
- 1
Cut stem 3-4 inches long with sterilized shears; remove lower leaves leaving 2-3 pairs at top
- 2
Allow cut end to callus 3-5 days in bright indirect light until dry and sealed
- 3
Insert callused end 1-2 inches deep into moist perlite or succulent mix
- 4
Water sparingly: mist medium every 5-7 days only when completely dry
- 5
Place in bright indirect light; roots emerge in 2-4 weeks, new growth in 6-8 weeks
How to Prevent It
Use clean cuts with at least 2-3 leaf pairs; allow cut end to callus 3-5 days; use perlite or pumice-only medium for rooting; maintain 65-75°F and bright indirect light.
