White Deposits on jade plant
What's Happening
White mineral deposits from tap water or fertilizer salts excreted via leaf hydathodes mimic mealybug ovisacs. Salts dissolve in water while pests resist. Jade's succulent physiology excretes excess minerals through marginal leaf pores under high humidity or over-fertilization.
How to Fix It
- 1
Dampen cotton q-tip or soft cloth with lukewarm water
- 2
Gently wipe deposits; salts dissolve easily, pests resist or leave sticky residue
- 3
Rinse leaves with distilled water spray if salts confirmed; dry to prevent water spots
- 4
Monitor 1-2 weeks; treat with alcohol if bugs appear (sticky trails, movement)
- 5
Switch to filtered water source and reduce fertilization frequency
How to Prevent It
Use distilled, rainwater, or filtered water; fertilize sparingly (every 2-3 months at 1/4 strength); ensure pot has drainage; wipe leaves monthly with damp cloth.
