Stem Spots on lucky bamboo
What's Happening
Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) stem and leaf spots are caused by 12 distinct fungal pathogens, with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides being the most prevalent (26.93% of leaf infections, 26.34% of stem infections). Survey data from 2018-2019 Egyptian nurseries identified the pathogen spectrum: Alternaria alternata (12.47%), Fusarium oxysporum (14.26%), Trichoderma harzianum (22.18%), and others. Pathogenicity tests confirm C. gloeosporioides as the most aggressive, colonizing 100% of inoculated stem segments.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect plants during high-risk seasons (March-May, August-October) when infection rates reach 45-55%
- 2
Isolate affected plants immediately to prevent spore spread via water and air
- 3
Remove severely infected stems below the infection line using sterile tools
- 4
Treat with systemic fungicide Kemazed (carbendazim) at 0.075g/100ml or apply biocontrol agents: Rhizo-N (Bacillus subtilis), Plant Guard (Trichoderma harzianum)
- 5
For vase culture: Replace water completely and sterilize container with 5% sodium hypochlorite before reintroducing treated plant
How to Prevent It
Avoid moisture stress during high-risk periods (March-May and August-October). Ensure proper air circulation around plants in vases. Quarantine new plants for 45 days before introducing to collection. Use sterilized containers (5% sodium hypochlorite soak for 5 minutes) and sterile distilled water for vase culture.
