Aerial Root Care on orchid
What's Happening
Aerial orchid roots photosynthesize through chloroplast-containing velamen cells and absorb atmospheric moisture. When forced into pots, aerial roots often rot from lack of airflow, or desiccate from low humidity. Indoor environments below 40% relative humidity cause aerial root tips to desiccate within 72 hours.
How to Fix It
- 1
Do not trim healthy aerial roots—they photosynthesize and absorb moisture
- 2
For aerial roots remaining outside pot: mist daily or use humidity trays
- 3
For repotting: position plant so newest aerial roots can emerge freely
- 4
Maintain 50-70% humidity for aerial root function; use humidifiers in dry climates
- 5
If aerial roots shrivel: increase humidity before watering more frequently
How to Prevent It
Mount orchids on cork bark or use open baskets for epiphytic species. Clear pots allow aerial root observation without forcing them into media.
