Humidity on orchid
What's Happening
Orchids are epiphytes evolved in tropical environments with 60-80% ambient humidity. In typical indoor conditions (30-50% humidity), orchids lose moisture through transpiration faster than roots can uptake water, causing chronic water stress. The velamen (outer root sheath) dries too quickly, reducing its ability to absorb atmospheric moisture and nutrients. Low humidity also increases susceptibility to spider mites and reduces the plant's ability to produce aerial roots.
How to Fix It
- 1
Install humidity tray or pebble tray beneath orchid pot (fill with water but keep pot above water line)
- 2
Group orchids together to create localized humidity microclimate around plants
- 3
Use room humidifier to maintain 50-70% relative humidity, particularly during winter heating season
- 4
Mist orchids in early morning only, allowing leaves to dry before evening to prevent fungal issues
- 5
Monitor humidity with hygrometer and adjust care seasonally - lower in summer, critical in winter
How to Prevent It
Maintain consistent 50-70% humidity year-round using humidifiers, pebble trays, or grouping plants; avoid placing orchids near heating vents, air conditioners, or drafty windows; increase humidity monitoring during winter when indoor heating reduces ambient moisture to dangerous levels.
