Fluoride Toxicity on peace lily
What's Happening
Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum spp.) are highly sensitive to fluoride accumulation in leaf tissues. Municipal tap water often contains 0.7-1.0 ppm fluoride for dental health, which accumulates at leaf margins over 2-4 weeks of regular watering. Fluoride disrupts cellular respiration in leaf tip cells, causing necrotic brown margins distinct from uniform desiccation.
How to Fix It

Switch to filtered, distilled, or rainwater immediately—reverse osmosis filters remove 90%+ of fluoride

If tap water is the only option, let water sit uncovered for 24-48 hours to allow chlorine to dissipate (note: fluoride does not evaporate)

Water thoroughly until 15-20% drains from bottom to flush existing salts, then discard runoff

Trim existing brown tips with clean scissors at a 45-degree angle following the leaf's natural shape
How to Prevent It
Use only filtered or distilled water for peace lilies. If municipal tap water is unavoidable, invest in a basic pitcher filter or collect rainwater—peace lilies cannot metabolize fluoride and will always show tip burn with regular tap water exposure.
