Salt Burn on peace lily
What's Happening
Mineral salts from synthetic fertilizers and tap water accumulate in soil when watering is shallow or infrequent. Over 3-6 months, electrical conductivity (EC) rises above 1.5 mS/cm, creating osmotic stress that pulls water out of root hairs. Peace lily leaf margins show the first damage due to their thin cuticle and high transpiration rate at edges.
How to Fix It
- 1
Flush soil thoroughly: place pot in shower or sink and run lukewarm water through for 3-5 minutes until drainage is clear
- 2
Allow to drain completely for 30-60 minutes—never let pot sit in standing water
- 3
Repeat flushing monthly during growing season (spring-fall) to prevent future buildup
- 4
Switch to diluted fertilizer at 1/4 recommended strength, applied only twice yearly
- 5
Use filtered or distilled water going forward to reduce salt input
How to Prevent It
Water thoroughly until 10-20% runoff drains from the bottom every time, then discard excess—this leaches accumulated salts. For peace lilies, this deep watering approach prevents the 'salt burn' that causes crispy brown tips.
