Water Propagation on propagation
What's Happening
Water propagation leverages aquatic root formation where developing adventitious roots access dissolved oxygen directly rather than extracting it from soil pore spaces. Root initiation occurs at nodal meristem tissue when auxin concentrations reach threshold levels, typically 7-21 days post-cutting depending on species temperature requirements and cutting maturity.
How to Fix It
- 1
Select healthy cutting with 2-3 nodes minimum - remove lower leaves to prevent rot and submersion
- 2
Use room-temperature dechlorinated water (let tap water sit 24 hours)
- 3
Submerge nodes 1-2 inches below water surface; aerial roots should remain above water
- 4
Change water every 5-7 days to maintain dissolved oxygen levels above 6mg/L
- 5
Roots emerge from nodes in 1-4 weeks; transplant when roots reach 2-3 inches in length
How to Prevent It
Transition to soil within 2-4 weeks of root emergence to prevent water-dependent root adaptation that causes transplant shock.
