Loss Of Variegation on alocasia frydek
What's Happening
Loss of variegation in Frydek is often cyclical (rosette growth pattern) or due to light deficiency (reversion to increase chlorophyll). White sections are also prone to browning from low silica levels, edema (cell burst), or low humidity.
How to Fix It
- 1
Increase light intensity to 300+ mol/m/s (bright indirect) using full-spectrum LED grow lights
- 2
Add a liquid silica supplement to strengthens cell walls and protect white variegated tissue
- 3
Stabilize humidity at 60-80% to prevent marginal browning/necrosis
- 4
Avoid pruning back to nodes; allow the plant to complete its natural variegation cycle
- 5
Water in the morning to prevent evening edema and cell rupture in variegated sections
How to Prevent It
Ensure high light levels year-round. Use a chunky aroid mix for root oxygenation. Fertilize consistently as they are heavy feeders. Use silica from day one for variegated cultivars.
