Mold on Orchid Soil: Identify the Growth and Treat the Cause

Review how the medium is drying throughout the pot. A damp-looking surface is not a reliable watering schedule, but neither is a fixed number of days. Pot size, medium type, light, temperature, and root activity all change how quickly an orchid uses water.

Treatment When the Media or Roots Are Decaying

Repot when the medium has broken down, smells sour, drains poorly, or surrounds unhealthy roots.

Gently remove the orchid and discard the old medium. Rinse away material that prevents you from inspecting the roots. With a clean cutting tool, remove roots that are soft, hollow, or clearly dead while preserving firm living roots.

Use fresh orchid media suited to the plant and your growing conditions. Choose a clean pot with effective drainage and enough room for the remaining root system, rather than placing a damaged orchid in a much larger volume of wet material.

Likewise, do not apply a fungicide merely because the surface looks fuzzy. Fungicides are intended for specific problems and must be labeled for the plant, setting, and disease. The useful response is evidence-first: identify what is growing, inspect the roots, correct the moisture and airflow problem, and repot only when the condition of the media or roots supports that decision.
