Low Humidity Damage on peace lily
What's Happening
Peace lilies are tropical understory plants adapted to 60-80% relative humidity (RH). Indoor environments typically maintain 30-45% RH, especially in winter with heating. When ambient humidity drops below 50%, leaf margins experience excessive transpiration—water evaporates from tip cells faster than the vascular system can replace it, causing cellular collapse and brown necrosis at the margins.
How to Fix It
- 1
Implement a humidity tray: fill shallow tray with pebbles, add water to just below pebble surface, set pot on top—evaporation raises local RH by 10-15%
- 2
Group plants together to create a microclimate with shared transpiration
- 3
Position away from heating vents, radiators, and air conditioners which create dry drafts
- 4
Consider a small humidifier for the room maintaining 50-60% RH
- 5
Trim brown tips with clean shears at 45 degrees to remove damaged tissue
How to Prevent It
Maintain consistent humidity above 50% via humidity trays, plant grouping, or automated humidifiers. Monitor with a digital hygrometer placed near the plant—peace lilies in homes below 40% RH will consistently develop brown tips regardless of perfect watering.
