Light Requirements

Pothos tolerates a wide light range, from low office lighting to bright indirect sun. Its variegated varieties fade in very low light, but the plant itself survives and continues growing. It prefers 50-70% humidity and stable temperatures between 65-75°F. Cold drafts below 60°F and dry winter air cause brown leaf tips, slowed growth, and increased susceptibility to spider mites. If your home runs dry in winter, a small humidifier near Dieffenbachia prevents most humidity-related issues before they start.

Growth Rate and Size

Pothos is a fast-growing vine. In ideal conditions, it adds several inches of trailing growth per month. It works well in hanging baskets, on shelves, or trained up a moss pole. Dieffenbachia grows upright from a central stalk, producing large broad leaves that can reach 12 inches long. It stays more compact vertically but needs floor space as it matures into a bushy specimen that can dominate a corner of your room.

Pet Safety

Both plants are toxic, but Dieffenbachia is significantly more dangerous. It contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause severe oral irritation, swelling, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by pets or children. Pothos also contains calcium oxalates and causes irritation, though symptoms are typically milder. If you have curious pets or small children, neither plant is ideal, but Pothos poses a slightly lower risk due to its smaller leaves and milder toxicity profile. Always place Dieffenbachia well out of reach on high shelves or in hanging planters.

Difficulty Level

Pothos is widely recommended for beginners because it bounces back from underwatering, low light, and inconsistent care. Dieffenbachia is manageable for an attentive grower but punishes neglect with yellow leaves, brown tips, and stunted growth.
