The Diagnosis: Why Velvet Leaves Hide Pests

Velvet-textured Alocasias like Dragon Scale, Silver Velvet, and Baginda create ideal conditions for spider mites and thrips. The ridged surface lets them hide and multiply undetected.

Spider mites weave protective webbing in the ridges of textured leaves. They prefer low-humidity (below 50% RH) and multiply fastest in dry, warm conditions. Prevention: 4 Habits That Keep Pests Away

Maintain 60-80% humidity year-round. Spider mites thrive in the dry air that most homes have during heating season.

Quarantine new plants for at least 2 weeks before placing near your collection. Shipping stress weakens plants and triggers pest shedding.

Apply preventive neem oil monthly during active growth (spring and summer).

Use a 10x magnifying loupe when inspecting textured leaves. What looks like dust on a velvet leaf might be the start of an infestation.
