The matt, velvety leaves absorb available light to support the plant's large size, but when that same plant is placed in direct midday sun in a home the leaf tissue receives more energy than it can use, and the surface bleaches or burns. Young expanding leaves are especially easy to damage because the cuticle and pigment layers have not yet thickened.
