Care Essentials

Get to Know Your Cheiridopsis

A resilient houseplant. With basic care, Cheiridopsis is hard to kill.

Light

medium to bright indirect

Most comfortable in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure.

💡 Grow lights: Thrives under artificial grow lights (LED or fluorescent, 10-12 hours/day). A great option if your space lacks natural light.

Watering

every 7-10 days

Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Adjust with the seasons — less in winter, more in summer.

Humidity & Temperature

Not fussy about humidity. Handles average indoor conditions without issue.

Standard room temperature (60-80°F / 15-27°C) is perfect. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature swings.

Soil

Standard well-draining potting mix works well. Add perlite for extra drainage if you tend to overwater.

Care Requirements: Cheiridopsis Guide

Cheiridopsis (Winter type) is a genus of small, clump-forming succulent plants from South Africa's Namaland region, related to Lithops and other 'mesembs

88%
Cause

Cheiridopsis (Winter type) is a genus of small, clump-forming succulent plants from South Africa's Namaland region, related to Lithops and other 'mesembs.' The genus name means 'hand-like' referring to the shape of the seed pods. Cheiridopsis have distinctive boat-shaped leaves with a hinge-like joint at the base, allowing the leaves to open and close. They produce daisy-like flowers in autumn that are typically yellow or white. The old leaf pairs are completely absorbed by the new growth — unlike Lithops where they persist.

Solutions
  • Water in autumn and winter when actively growing — allow to dry between waterings
  • Keep nearly or completely dry in spring and summer — their dormant period
  • Use 90%+ inorganic gritty mix — excellent drainage essential
  • Old leaf pairs are fully absorbed by new growth — no external dead leaves to remove
  • Flowers emerge between leaf pairs in autumn
Prevention

Water only in autumn/winter; keep completely dry in spring/summer; use extremely gritty soil.
