Brownish cankers then form on the roots and on the stem below the soil line, and a severe infection girdles the stem so the plant dies.

Solutions
  • Practice a crop rotation with at least 4 to 5 years between bean plantings so the Fusarium fungus in the soil has no host to survive on.
  • Treat the seed with a fungicide at planting: use 2 ounces of 75 percent thiram or 2 ounces of 75 percent captan per 100 pounds of seed to control seed decay and damping-off.
Prevention

Plant beans in warm, well-drained soil so seedlings escape the cold, waterlogged conditions that favor Fusarium, and rotate out of beans for at least 4 to 5 years to keep soil inoculum low.
