Fusarium root rot fungi attack bean seedlings growing in wet, cold soils, rotting the seed before or during germination and twisting or stunting the young seedling. Brownish cankers then form on the roots and on the stem below the soil line, and a severe infection girdles the stem so the plant dies.
Solutions
- Practice a crop rotation with at least 4 to 5 years between bean plantings so the Fusarium fungus in the soil has no host to survive on.
- Treat the seed with a fungicide at planting: use 2 ounces of 75 percent thiram or 2 ounces of 75 percent captan per 100 pounds of seed to control seed decay and damping-off.
Prevention
Plant beans in warm, well-drained soil so seedlings escape the cold, waterlogged conditions that favor Fusarium, and rotate out of beans for at least 4 to 5 years to keep soil inoculum low.
