Root rot in neon pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is most often driven by soil-borne fungi Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii, which persist as vegetative mycelium and sclerotia in growing media and attack the basal stem and root system of established plants and freshly stuck cuttings, drastically reducing root length, fresh weight, and dry weight before above-ground symptoms become obvious

Root rot in neon pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is most often driven by soil-borne fungi Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii, which persist as vegetative mycelium and sclerotia in growing media and attack the basal stem and root system of established plants and freshly stuck cuttings, drastically reducing root length, fresh weight, and dry weight before above-ground symptoms become obvious.

Solutions
  • Use clean, well-draining potting media and disinfest pots before replanting to reduce Rhizoctonia and Sclerotium inoculum
  • Avoid waterlogging; allow the top of the medium to dry between waterings and discard any standing water in the saucer
  • Soak the basal end of cuttings for 30 minutes in a 3000 ppm thyme or clove oil nanoemulsion, or a 2 g/L carbendazim dip, before planting into infested or reused media
  • Remove and destroy any cutting or plant with soft, blackened basal stems and rotten roots; do not compost
  • Re-treat or replace the potting medium and isolate the affected plant until new root growth is visible
