As plants mature and enter the reproductive phase, rooting capacity declines sharply — mature cuttings may have 0% rooting where juvenile cuttings achieve 80%+.
Solutions
- Select stock plants in juvenile phase (not yet capable of flowering)
- For mature specimens: prune heavily to stimulate juvenile sucker growth from the base
- Take cuttings from the youngest stems — basal growth is most juvenile
- Serial grafting mature scions onto juvenile rootstocks can restore rooting ability
- For species that lose rooting capacity with age: use root cuttings which produce juvenile shoots
